Opposition leader Peter Dutton is under fire from everyday Aussies and rival politicians for wishing Muslims a “happy Ramadan” on social media.
In an apparent appeal to Islamic voters ahead of the upcoming federal election, the Liberal Party leader wrote: “On behalf of the Coalition, I wish Australians of Islamic faith a happy Ramadan.
“During the holy month of Ramadan, I hope you find revitalisation in your Taraweeh prayers and rejuvenation through your fasts. Ramadan Mubarak.”

But Mr Dutton’s X post soon attracted more critical comments than likes, with hundreds of irritated Australians chiming in to say they are sick of politicians pandering to minorities and pushing multiculturalism.
United Australia Party Senator Ralph Babet was among those who took exception to the post, writing: “Mr Dutton, Australia was founded as a Christian nation. It must forever and always remain a Christian nation. I find your post offensive.”
“Please stop it. Australians aren’t happy with this ‘multiculturalism’ agenda. People are over the takeover/takedown of our society,” read another popular comment.
Others warned Mr Dutton that he was in danger of losing their support.
“A certified vote loser. Muslims aren’t voting for you, mate. They vote for whoever is going to bring more of them and destroy Australia the fastest,” one wrote.
“Peter, don’t pander. You’re starting to piss a lot of people off,” said another.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made a similar post earlier on Friday that attracted just as much criticism.
“I’d love to have a Prime Minister that actually cared about the MAJORITY in this country instead of the minorities, just once,” wrote popular libertarian political commentator Mickamious.
“You know a Prime Minister that put AUSTRALIANS FIRST, not his party, But actually Australia First. Ramadan is Not Part of Australian Culture.”
Conservative commentator Kobie Thatcher wrote: “Typical Labor sucking up to every other culture while making life worse for Aussies.”
Another responded directly to Mr Albanese’s statement that “Australia’s Muslim community enriches our society and our country in countless ways”.
“In other words, you reckon Australian culture isn’t good enough and you have to flood us with Muslims to fix it. Why do Aussies have to put up with this disrespect from the PM of own country?” he asked.
The pandering from the Opposition leader and Prime Minister comes after a survey published earlier this month showed that 80% of Australians want immigration lowered, a supermajority don’t want more “diversity”, and most feel politicians ignore their views.
Mr Dutton disappointed conservatives late last year by backtracking on his net migration cut targets, refusing to support caps on international students and supporting the government’s social media ban.
And while pandering to Chinese voters earlier this month he bragged that he brought record numbers of immigrants into Australia while serving as Home Affairs Minister.
