Perth police shoot dog dead after it bit officer on the face during violent arrest

A dog has been shot dead by police after biting an officer on the face during a violent arrest in Perth.

Western Australia Police were called to a home in Canning Vale on Saturday afternoon after reports of a disturbance, and arrested a 23-year-old man, Nine News reported.

But during the arrest a dog attacked a male officer, biting him on the face.

Police said they tried non-lethal methods to restrain the dog but those measures failed to stop the attack and firearms were discharged.

Inspector Vic Hussey said the injured officer was “shaken up”.

“The actual arrest itself sounded as though it was quite violent,” he said.

“And then during that incident the dog then attacking the officer as well, obviously that has really upset him deeply.”

The officer was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital with facial injuries and lacerations to his ear.
