A man has been arrested after an black man allegedly threatened several people with a knife at a Perth train station.
Western Australia Police released an urgent public message on Monday over the terrifying alleged incident at Leederville Train Station, which took place at 7.30am during the morning commute.
The police airwing and canine squad were brought in to search for the man after he allegedly fled the station, and CCTV images were released.
“He was last seen wearing a black tracksuit top, black tracksuit bottoms with white writing on the leg, white runners and carrying an insulated shopping bag,” WA Police said at the time.
“Members of the public should not approach the man under any circumstances as he is believed to be armed with a knife.”
Police did not mention the man’s race or ethnicity, but from the CCTV he is of aboriginal or African appearance.
But on Monday night police confirmed a suspect had been arrested.
“One male is currently in custody and assisting police with inquiries,” a police spokesperson said.
“The investigation remains ongoing.”
No-one was injured in the alleged incident.
Locals reacted to the incident with fury on social media, with some asking why the police had not released a description of the suspect.
“Considering how dangerous he could be, how about a more comprehensive description please? Age range, race, skin colour, facial hair, you know what is needed,” said one Perth resident.
“I heard this on the radio and all that was said was what he was wearing and carrying. So I have to agree with you,” another said.
“They need to give a full, detailed description of what he looks like i.e hair colour, eye colour, skin colour, assumed ethnicity, age etc. This has nothing to do with what race you are but more about the dangerous actions of a person.”
