Update: Argentinian man Norberto Trimestra, 68, faced court on Saturday and was granted bail on the condition he not drink alcohol, not enter the Sydney CBD, and report to police twice a week, The Daily Telegraph reported. Police opposed bail saying they were concerned for “public safety” if released and that his alleged behaviour would escalate.
A man who allegedly performed Nazi salutes in a Sydney pub was refused bail on Friday night, just hours after a teacher charged with possessing child abuse material was allowed to walk free after his arrest.
NSW Police said on Saturday that a security guards at a hotel on Pitt St flagged down officers after a man, 68, allegedly made the banned hand gesture inside the venue and refused to leave.
He was arrested and charged with excluded person fail to leave premises when required, knowingly display by public act Nazi symbol without excuse and make a gesture in a public place that is a Nazi salute.
The man was then refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today.
Hours earlier a 23-year-old man was arrested at Maitland Police station and charged with possess child abuse material.
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on January 15.
Police said an investigation into the man, a teacher, was launched on December 3 after reports he was in possession of child abuse material.
“On Wednesday 4 December 2024, police executed a search warrant at a school in Port Stephens and seized several devices for forensic examination,” police said in a statement.
The Nazi salute charge comes after a 20-year-old man was arrested for making the political gesture at a “transgender” rally in Sydney late last month.
