Armed cops raid New Zealand dad’s home for ‘offensive, anti-police and anti-government’ X posts

A New Zealand father-of-four has been raided by armed police over a series of alleged X posts which were deemed offensive by authorities, including some that were critical of police and the government.

Video footage filmed by the man, who wants to remain anonymous, on Friday shows the large group of officers turn up at his home on Auckland’s North Shore at about 5pm on Friday to check his home for firearms, even though they knew he had sold those he possessed following a previous police roust two weeks earlier.

Despite the man’s requests to see a warrant and pleas not to go inside and upset his four young children, police pushed through the door claiming that they needed to check his safe. The man was not arrested or charged, and is not accused of a crime.

The video was shared on X by citizen photojournalist Simon Anderson along with CCTV footage from the home showing a female police officer twice try to snatch the man’s phone from his hand as he filmed.

Documents from the New Zealand Police Firearms Safety Authority confirm that the man had informed police that he had sold his firearms on August 13, five days after being “visited” by police and grilled about his social media posts.

The documents state the Firearms Safety Authority had determined the man was “no longer a fit and proper person to be in possession of a firearm or airgun” due to posts with an “anti-government and anti-police attitude”, and that are allegedly racist, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic and “promote violence towards minorities”.

The ten alleged examples listed in the documents of posts going back to January 2022 include the posts “I am very anti-government and believe most regulations are stupid” and “The police need to be held to account. Biggest gang in NZ”.

Police also alleged the man posted “a meme on X claiming you are a racist”, “an image of 4 progress pride flags arranged to resemble a swastika”, and a comment stating police are “… dangerous. They could kill you and not be charged. Police should not be approached or spoken to”.

Another allegedly contained a photo of five cats that “had been doctored to spell out the word ‘Nigger'”.

Another post about Maoris allegedly said they should require licenses to have children and be banned from buying alcohol, while during a debate about gay rights the man allegedly said “gays shouldn’t be seen in society, especially by kids”, “gay rights are definitely new and not good for society”, and “gays don’t reproduce, they recruit”.

The most recent alleged post was “only as human shields” in response to the question “should gays/trans be able to serve in the military”.

“Police are further concerned that your aggressive and dehumanising attitude towards people who are of a different race, gender or sexuality than yourself could lead to acts of violence,” the documents stated.

“The inflammatory and antagonist posts you have created have the potential of inciting or inspiring violence against those who are your targets. It could be perceived that this is your intention.”

The video shows the man quietly ask his wife to go inside as police arrive before telling officers that they cannot go in with her.

A female police officer immediately tells him he’ll be “arrested for obstruction” as he films, and when he asks if they have a warrant the police say “we don’t need one”.

“You need to show us where those guns are,” another cops says, and the man replies: “I’ve told you, I don’t have any guns here”.

His wife can be heard screaming “no” as officers then push their way inside, and he says “I’ve got children in there”.

“You guys are making this harder than it needs to be,” an officer says.

“I don’t want you coming in the house without a warrant,” the father replies. Cops then tell him to “stop yelling”, and when asked if he has broken the law they tell him that he has not.

“Have I broken the law?” he asks repeatedly while his children cry in the background, one child running into his fathers arms at one point in the video.

“You’ve endangered my family,” he tells the officers at the end of the clip.
