A manhunt is underway after a late-night stabbing in Melbourne‘s CBD left a man needing surgery for severe knife wounds.

Victoria Police made a public appeal for assistance on Monday over the incident, which took place outside a licensed premises on King Street just before midnight on September 22.

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives believe the victim, a 30-year-old North Melbourne man, was involved in an altercation with a stranger at about 11.50pm.

“As the victim tried to leave in a taxi, the man stabbed him twice and fled on foot,” police said.

“The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries where he underwent surgery.

“Detectives have released images and CCTV of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

“The man is perceived to be of Torres Strait Islander appearance, and wearing a black and white hoodie, black pants, black shoes, and a black bag.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact police.
