Hunt for Indian scammer who stole $15,000 from elderly woman in Western Australia

A manhunt is underway for a dark-skinned Indian man who scammed an elderly woman out of about $15,000 in Mandurah.

Western Australia Police said the woman in her 80s received a phone call from a Melbourne phone number on February 4 this year.

The caller claimed they were from the National Australia Bank security office and advised the victim to withdraw the equivalent of US$10,000 (about A$15,000) to assist in the apprehension of scammers, police said.

The woman was then given a collection location and password with details to confirm the money was given to the correct person.

Detectives have now released images of a man of Indian or subcontinental appearance they believe may be able to assist with the investigation.

“He is approximately 170cm (5’7″), and has a full beard,” Mandurah District Police said.

“Anyone who can identify the person pictured, or who has any information relating to this incident, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Local residents reacted angrily to the incident.

“Send him back when you catch him,” said one.

“Straight on plane back to his country, no ifs or buts,” said another.

“Why would a bank allow this lady to withdraw that much cash without asking her why she needs it?” asked a third.
