An Indian man allegedly stuck his mobile phone under a public shower cubicle and filmed a naked five-year-old girl at a Melbourne beach.
Victoria Police have appealed for help identifying the suspected paedophile, who they allege took video footage of the young girl at the Williamstown Beach public shower cubicles at about 3pm on Wednesday, January 31.
Police said the child’s mother confronted the man, who fled on foot towards Victoria Street.
Westgate Sexual Offences & Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have since released images of a man they believe can help with their inquiries.
“The man is perceived to be of Indian Sub-Continental appearance, approximately 30-years-old, with a medium build, black hair and olive skin,” police said.
“He was wearing a black hooded jumper, grey tracksuit pants and slides.”
Indians are the fastest-growing immigrant group in Australia, and according to the 2021 Census 3.1% of the population now has Indian ancestry – more than 784,000 people – a 400% increase over the past 20 years.
According to India’s National Crime Records Bureau, there were almost 90 rapes a day reported across India in 2022, with Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh recording the highest number of cases.
