A man who was shot multiple times by police in northern New South Wales after running at them with a knife has been identified as an indigenous criminal with a history of drug use.
Mark Skinner, 32, was shot several times after a standoff with two officers in Grafton at about 6.30am on Wednesday. NSW Police said he approached police and threatened them with a knife before being shot.
Skinner was given first aid at the scene and airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition. The officers were not injured, and a critical incident team will investigate the shooting, which will also be subject to an independent review.
Family members of the crazed knifeman told The Daily Telegraph he had been “going through a lot lately”, had a history of methamphetamine and was recently released from jail.
Police earlier confirmed Skinner, who has not been charged over Wednesday’s incident, was known to them.
On Facebook an upset relative wrote: “No1 knows full story on wtf happened. He was going through a lot lately so leave ya comment n opinions to yourself.
“His family is reading this yet again yous wouldn’t like it if it was your SON/BROTHER/COUSIN 100%.”
