Police are looking for a scammer of Indian or Middle Eastern appearance who conned a 91-year-old Victorian woman out of more than $130,000.
The elderly woman from Foster received a phone call from someone claiming to be from her bank on September 19 last year, Victoria Police said.
He told the her fraudulent charges had been made on her account, and later that day a person came to her home to collect her bank card.
The fraudster then used the card to buy gift cards at a number of stores between September 19 and 23.
Investigators believe the card was used 130 times – in in Airport West, Altona, Bacchus Marsh, Balaclava, Caulfield, Chadstone, Corio, Deer Park, Elsternwick, Essendon, Footscray, Geelong, Maribyrnong, Hoppers Crossing, Malvern, Moonee Ponds, Point Cook, Port Melbourne Spotswood, Sunshine, Werribee, Williamstown and Yarraville – before it was cancelled.
Victoria Police on Thursday released images of man they believe may be able to assist with enquiries.
No further description of the man, who was wearing a blue surgical mask and a cap, was provided by police, but he is of Indian subcontinental or Middle Eastern appearance.
