Muslim immigrant allegedly kept driving after fatally striking aboriginal woman who was sitting in the road

A Muslim immigrant mother-of-five has been granted bail after being charged over the alleged hit-and-run death of an aboriginal woman who was struck while sitting in the road in suburban Adelaide.

Zakia Bashi Qamber, 55, was arrested at her home in Hillbank on Wednesday and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing harm by dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident where someone had died.

She faced Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday where her case proceeded despite a Farsi interpreter not being available, as police prosecutors did not oppose her bail application, The Advertiser reported.

Ms Qamber, who is yet to enter a plea and has no criminal record, was released on the condition she not enter the driver’s seat of a car, stay away from international points of departure, and live at her family home.

She did not comment as she left court in a red headscarf supported by her son.

Magistrate David White noted that police facts said the pedestrian, a 40-year-old woman from the state’s Far North, “may have sat down in an area near the road when she was struck from behind”, ABC News reported.

The woman died from serious injuries after being struck on Kinkaid Road in Elizabeth East on Tuesday morning, with police called at 4.40am.

Police allege Ms Qamber hit the woman in her Toyota Prado and then failed to stop and render assistance. Her car was found in Paralowie and has been seized for forensic testing.

Locals said they heard fighting and yelling in the street before the crash.

Ms Qamber’s lawyer told 7 News he had no comment on behalf of his client, and that “it would seem a really tragic case”.
