ABC tries to write an article on ‘period poverty’ without mentioning women

MEDIA SHAME FILE

Outlet: ABC News

Headline: Majority of people who menstruate struggle to afford sanitation products, new study on period poverty shows

Summary: ABC Journalist Heloise Vyas, who appears to be a woman, really tries not to mention the W-word in this article about “period poverty”.

She goes with “people who menstruate”, “the country’s menstruating population” and “those who menstruate”, but soon runs into problems when she is inevitably forced to admit that menstruation is a uniquely female problem, and needs to use official statistics to make her point (although she does note that her calculations do not account for “gender-diverse” people).

Then as the article progresses she seems to give up completely, writing: “The report said occupations suffering most from period poverty are lower paying than others, however they are also typically feminised carers jobs. Women make up the greatest part of the paid and unpaid support workforce in Australia and operate in roles that are typically undervalued and insecure.”

Good effort Heloise, but in the end it turns out you’re just as transphobic as us.

Key quote: “Australia’s cost of living crunch has seen more than half the country’s menstruating population forgo basic period products”

Subtext: “If you don’t think that only women can menstruate you’re a far-right extremist”
