An HIV-positive homosexual paedophile who was recently released from prison in Western Australia has been charged after allegedly sending a boy, 12, child exploitation material and trying to meet him in order to rape him and give him AIDS.
The 53-year-old truck driver, whose name has been suppressed, was refused bail in Broome Magistrates Court last week after police warned he was “actively trying to infect people” with AIDS due to his “bug-chasing” fetish, making him a danger to society, ABC News reported.
The man, who had just served a jail sentence for raping a teenage boy in Perth, had his phone searched by police after failing to abide by the conditions of his release, and officers allegedly discovered a “large volume” of child sex abuse material of the most extreme category.
Police prosecutor Mícheál Gregg said the material was “chilling”, and included footage of the man raping a boy, 14, and hundreds of images and photos showing infants and prepubsecent teenagers being sexually abused.
The convicted paedophile used the apps Signal and Telegram to speak to a boy, 12, who he was allegedly trying to meet for sex, the court heard, and police alleged he sent the boy child exploitation material.
He was charged with possessing child exploitation material, intending to procure a child under 13 for sexual activity, two counts of failing to comply with reporting obligations, and attempting to possess a prohibited drug.
Magistrate Deen Potter said the child rapist was a flight risk due to his work as a heavy haulage truck driver, and noted that it appeared he had an “ingrained desire to pursue children” in refusing bail.
The man’s defence lawyer Ebony Deacon applied for a suppression order to ensure the man was given a “fair trial” and despite a submission from the ABC stating that reporting the man’s name was in the public interest, Magistrate Potter agreed to keep the man’s identity secret.
However, Magistrate Potter said there was “clearly a need” for the charges to be publicly known, and along with Ms Deacon agreed the man’s identity would be revealed if he pleaded guilty or was found guilty.
The paedophile will return to court on June 17.
