More than 50 officers were injured in clashes between police and thousands of angry Middle Eastern Christians outside the western Sydney church where a popular bishop was allegedly stabbed by an Islamic terrorist.
Photos taken in the midst of the chaos by reporter Chriscoveries show police in riot gear climbing the stairs into homes neighbouring Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley on Monday night while rioters pelt them with rocks.
A frightened couple can be seen running for cover, while in other images taken by the livestreamer police block streets where the angry mob was trying to get to the 16-year-old alleged terrorist, who was inside the church after allegedly stabbing Bishop Emmanuel Mar Mari as he addressed worshippers.
NSW Police on Thursday confirmed that 51 officers were hurt in the clashes, and said they were seeking to identify up to 50 suspected rioters. A man, 19, was arrested on Wednesday in Doonside, and charged with riot, affray and destroy/damage property.
On Thursday evening the 16-year-old was charged with committing a terrorist act, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. He was refused bail and will face a bedside court hearing on Friday.
