The gay community is divided after an influential LGBT advocacy group classified “homosexual” as a “term to avoid” and declared that it was “offensive”.
Media-monitoring NGO GLAAD, previously known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, says in its media reference guide that “homosexuals” is “an outdated term considered derogatory and offensive to many lesbian and gay people”.
“Because of the clinical history of the word ‘homosexual,’ it is aggressively used by anti-LGBTQ activists to suggest that people attracted to the same sex are somehow diseased or psychologically/emotionally disordered,” GLAAD said.
“Please avoid using ‘homosexual’ except in direct quotes. Please also avoid using ‘homosexual’ as a style variation simply to avoid repeated use of the word ‘gay’. Many mainstream news outlets’ style guides restrict use of the term ‘homosexual’.”
Anti-LGBTQIA+ advocacy group Gays Against Groomers (GAG) slammed the move, which it described as “abhorrent”.
“Gender ideology is a disease, and our movement is the cure. We will not be silenced or erased by this Orwellian newspeak,” the group said in a statement.

GAG also objected to GLAAD’s classification of the word “groomer” as an anti-LGBT slur.
According to GLAAD the word “groomer” is “dangerous hate speech which has been popularised to foment fear and hatred, and ultimately violence, against LGBTQ people”.
“Fact check: only groomers are offended by the word groomer, and if you hear it and think of gay or trans people, that makes you the bigot,” GAG said.
Homosexual social media users were disturbed by the GLAAD guidelines, with many saying it was an attempt to “erase” gays.
“I’ve noticed that the trans-movement is erasing homosexuality far more than anything that so-called homophobic conservatives have ever done,” said one X user.
“I’ve been watching this happen. They deny biological sex and so must eradicate homosexuality,” said another.
“They’ve invented a crazy new thing that should be called ‘homogenderality’. Now your partner’s whims determine your sexual orientation. You automatically become ‘straight’ if your same-sex partner declares they are now the opposite gender during sex!
“Gender Ideology is barking madness.”
GAG has been labelled a “far-right” and/or “extremist” group by the Jewish ADL, left-wing LGBT organisations and corporate media outlets for opposing drag queen story hour events where children are sexualised by crossdressing transexuals.
