UN warns Great Replacement ‘conspiracy theory’ is growing in power and attacks the ‘war on woke’

Volker Türk, High Commissioner for Human Rights Great Replacement

The United Nations rights chief has warned that the idea of the Great Replacement is becoming more powerful in Europe in a speech where he also criticised the “war on woke”.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Monday told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that “multiculturalism is not a threat” and said that a growing awareness that European people are being replaced by immigrants in their homelands is spurring violence.

“In many countries — including in Europe and North America — I am concerned by the apparently growing influence of so-called ‘great replacement’ conspiracy theories, based on the false notion that Jews, Muslims, non-White people and migrants seek to ‘replace’ or suppress countries cultures and peoples,” he said.

“These delusional and deeply racist ideas have directly influenced many perpetrators of violence.”

“Together with the so-called ‘war on woke’, which is really a war on inclusion, these ideas aim to exclude racial minorities — particularly women from racial minorities and LGBTQ+ people from full equality.

“Multiculturalism is not a threat. It is the history of humanity and deeply beneficial to us all.”

Mr Turk also claimed that discriminatory legislation and policies were spreading which he called regrettable, complained about perceived racial disparities in policing in Germany, Spain and Sweden, and lashed out at Hungary for allegedly eroding media freedoms and undermining the judiciary.

The Great Replacement is a term coined by French author Renaud Camus to describe a phenomenon where the native populations in Europe and the Anglosphere are demographically and culturally “replaced” with non-White immigrants as a result of policies pushed or approved by political elites.

The phenomenon in generally described as a “conspiracy theory” in the corporate press and by pro-immigration elites who simultaneously celebrate growing cultural and ethnic diversity in formerly homogenous nations and champion multiculturalism, as Mr Turk did in his speech.

Mr Camus himself said in a 2022 interview with IM-1776: “The Great Replacement is not a theory at all, but just a sad fact, a ‘chrononym’, i.e. name for an epoch after its most important phenomenon, indeed replacism (or more exactly globalreplacism).”

More recently Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was the subject of a mainstream media pile-on for calling the Great Replacement real, but polling at the end of 2023 found that most Americans agree.

“57% of likely US voters believe it is likely that some people are promoting mass immigration to the United States as part of a political agenda to replace the existing American population, including 36% who say it’s very likely,” Rasmussen Reports found.

Immigration is now the most important issue facing the US, according to a Gallup poll.
